Garden Room Acoustics

29th March 2025

Soundproofing your garden room

Whether you need a quiet space to focus or a place to turn up the volume, garden room acoustics are an essential aspect to consider when designing your building.

For example, if you’re a musician practising your craft, the last thing you want is to worry about disturbing the neighbours. Likewise, if you’re working in a garden office, you don’t want the sound of a lawnmower breaking your concentration. To tackle this, we’ve developed an acoustic pack designed to reduce noise and enhance your garden room experience. But how well does it really work?

To find out, we set up a series of tests to measure how well our acoustic pack performs in real-world garden room environments. The goal was to understand the effectiveness of the pack in reducing various types of noise, and the results may surprise you.

The Testing Process

With our acoustic pack in mind, we conducted a series of controlled tests using a high-quality speaker and a precise sound level meter. These tests were carefully designed to simulate a variety of common noise including train noise, birdsong, music, lawnmowers, white noise, and power tools, capturing how effectively the garden room insulated against each one. To obtain reliable and consistent measurements, we positioned the sound level meter approximately 1.5 feet away from the building, both inside and outside.

Key Insights from the Garden Room Acoustics Testing

The data reveals that the average sound reduction across all sources was about 31.65 dB. This means that, on average, the acoustic pack helped reduce the noise level by more than 30 decibels, which is a significant improvement.

However, the reduction varied depending on the type of sound. For example, louder noises like trains and lawnmowers experienced a much more substantial reduction, with noise levels dropping by over 38 dB in some cases. On the other hand, higher-pitched sounds like birdsong saw a smaller reduction, around 14 dB. This highlights an important point: the type of sound plays a crucial role in determining the effectiveness of soundproofing.

6 Ways to Reduction Noise in Your Garden Room

While our acoustic pack performs exceptionally well at reducing noise, there are a few additional steps you can take to enhance the soundproofing of your garden room further. Here are some practical tips to maximise noise reduction:

1. Use High-Pile Area Rugs

If your garden room has hard floors, consider adding large area rugs with a high pile. These rugs absorb sound and help reduce echoes, creating a quieter environment inside.

2. Install Acoustic Curtains

Acoustic curtains are designed to block out external noise and are an easy and effective solution for enhancing soundproofing. Installing these curtains in your garden room will provide additional noise isolation and make the space even more peaceful.

3. Incorporate Soft Furnishings

Soft furnishings like cushions, upholstered chairs, and fabric wall coverings can absorb sound and improve the overall acoustics of the room. These simple additions can make a noticeable difference in the noise levels inside.

4. Consider Acoustic Panels

If you’re looking for a more customised solution, acoustic panels can be strategically placed on the walls to absorb sound waves. Acoustic wallpaper is another option that can help reduce sound reflection while enhancing the room’s aesthetic.

5. Opt for a Minimal Glass Design

Designing your garden room with minimal glass can significantly reduce the amount of noise that enters the space. By reducing the amount of glass used on doors or opting for fully clad doors instead, you can create a more insulated environment and cut down on decibels effectively.

6. Add More Plants

Incorporating plants into your garden room isn’t just great for aesthetics, it also helps absorb and diffuse sound. Both potted plants and vertical green walls can act as natural sound buffers, reducing noise levels and creating a calmer space.

What’s Included in Our Acoustics Pack – And Why It’s Different

Our acoustic pack is designed for those who need exceptional sound insulation, whether you’re creating the noise or trying to escape it.

It’s ideal for music studios, home cinemas, podcasting rooms, or simply enjoying complete peace and quiet. While all standard Green Retreats garden rooms offer a good level of sound-dampening, the acoustic pack gives you the confidence that noise, either coming in or going out, won’t be a disruption.

Here’s how the acoustic pack goes beyond the standard:

garden room soundproofing

Rubber Membrane Layer

  • A full rubber wrap is applied to all internal surfaces, which is something not included in our standard builds. This acts as the first barrier to sound transmission, helping to block and contain noise right at the source.

High-Density Rockwool Acoustic Insulation

  • Unlike the standard thermal insulation, the acoustic pack uses specialised high-density Rockwool, renowned for its sound absorption properties as well as added thermal performance.

Acoustic Plasterboard with Green Glue Sound Compound

  • This dual-layer system is a significant upgrade from regular wallboard. The Green Glue compound sits between two layers of plasterboard and actively dissipates sound vibrations, dramatically reducing airborne noise.

Acoustic Laminated Glass

  • Our standard garden rooms already feature double glazing, but the acoustic pack replaces this with acoustic laminated glass, which offers superior noise reduction without compromising natural light.

Smooth Plastered Finish

  • The acoustic pack includes a professionally plastered finish, giving your room a polished interior that’s not only soundproof but ready to decorate in any style you choose.

With this comprehensive system, you’ll enjoy a space that offers professional-grade acoustic protection, perfect for creative work or personal getaways. It’s more than just a quiet room; it’s a sound-controlled environment purpose-built for performance and comfort.
