Can A Summer House Be Insulated For All Year Use?

Yes. A summer house can be insulated for year-round use when it includes insulation in the walls, floor and roof, along with high-performance double glazing. Properly constructed insulated summer houses retain heat during winter, reduce overheating in summer and help minimise condensation, creating a comfortable internal environment in every season.

At Green Retreats, our insulated summer houses are designed for permanent, all year use, with premium materials and professional installation included as standard, ensuring reliable comfort and long-term performance.

How Do I Choose The Right Size Summer House For My Garden?

Choose the right size summer house by balancing how you plan to use it with the space available in your garden. Think about the furniture or equipment it needs to fit and allow enough room for comfortable movement rather than a tight layout.

You should also consider garden proportions, access around the building and how much outdoor space you want to keep. The right size should feel practical, well balanced and naturally integrated into your garden.

Why Choose Us

Is Planning Permission Required for A Summer House In The UK?

In many cases, a summer house does not require planning permission if it falls within permitted development rights. This typically depends on factors such as overall height, size, location within the garden and whether your property has specific restrictions, such as being in a conservation area.

At Green Retreats, we design our garden buildings to comply with permitted development guidelines wherever possible and provide expert guidance to ensure your project meets current UK regulations.

Summer House FAQs

Occasional sleeping, like a guest staying over or a lazy afternoon nap, is generally fine. A summer house isn’t classed as a permanent living space though, so it shouldn’t be used as a full-time bedroom or separate residence without the right permissions and compliance.

If you’re planning regular overnight use, it’s worth checking local rules to make sure everything stays within guidelines.

Yes. Many summer houses include electrical connections for lighting, sockets, heating and connectivity. This allows the building to function like a natural extension of your home. Installation should always be carried out safely and in accordance with regulations to ensure reliability and peace of mind.

Summer houses are versatile spaces that adapt to changing needs. Popular uses include relaxation lounges, creative studios, reading rooms, hobby spaces, entertaining areas or quiet retreats away from the main home. The best designs focus on flexibility so the space can evolve over time.

Yes, a proper base is essential. A solid, level foundation supports the structure, prevents movement, and protects against moisture. Without it, the building may become uneven over time, affecting doors, windows and long-term durability. A professionally prepared base helps your summer house perform reliably for years.

A garden building, including a summer house will add value to your home! Leading property experts estimate quality garden buildings add 1.5 times their value to a home.

We don’t offer a completely sound proof solution for your garden room. We do, however, offer an acoustic pack which reduces the transfer of sound to approximately -45db – however this is not ‘sound proof’. Although we use industry-leading acoustically laminated glass, this is the least effective component of our acoustic pack. Please bear in mind that the more glass you opt for on your garden room, the lesser the effect the acoustic pack will have.

As standard, all of our buildings are clad in maintenance-free Scandinavian Redwood. Also included is a 2.3m sliding door set and an opening lozenge window. We also include a choice of four flooring options, three double plug sockets, a choice of internal lighting, an external light, a 2-way consumer unit (fuse box) and a wall-mounted radiator.

DIY can seem cheaper upfront, but costs for materials, tools, groundwork, and your time can quickly add up. Buying a professionally made summer house costs more initially, but includes installation, quality construction, and warranties, which often makes it better value overall.

Usually no. A standard summer house used as part of your home does not have separate council tax.
